The PhD program is distinguished from others because of its research with a toxicology point of view. Thus, it will be approached from alcohol-and-drug-dependence mechanisms to exposure to environmental factors such as heavy metals, pesticides and some others that add up to the growth of Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases.
The many different research areas developed within the Ph.D programme are focused on answering questions about the pathophysiological mechanisms of Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases (e.g. cancer, high blood pressure, neurodegenerative diseases, and diabetes).
All of these are grouped in two research areas:
-Cellular and systemic function: normal and pathological.
-Xenobiotics as toxicological and pharmacological agents.
We aim to shape ethical and socially responsible researchers within the Biomedical Sciences field with the capabilities to contribute to scientific knowledge as well as come up with solutions to significant health issues in Northern Chile in the hope of expanding nationally and internationally.
To contribute to the training of scientists with the analytical rigour and ability to research within the borderline we call ‘knowledge’.
From fundamental knowledge to real application in the solution of the population’s most relevant health issues related to both lifestyle and ageing.
To promote the generation of new biomedical insight considering the environmental factors affecting health and disease in the regional and national community

UCN’s Ph.D. In Biomedical Sciences is meant for professionals who have either (1) a professional title/degree in the Biomedical and/or Medical Sciences field or one related to the Programme (2) or a professional title/degree from other fields whose background can guarantee their suitability to the Programme.
Applicants must prove proper communication and comprehension skills regarding scientific-technical English.
Weightings for each factor that shall be considered for the selection process are as follows:
- Undergraduate academic background: 35%.
- Educational path (involvement in research projects, publications, etc.): 20%.
- Recommendations: 10%.
- Date: 1st September 2022.

Applicants must take a special entry exam about: Biomedical Sciences – the ability to use the scientific method – and the proper English skills in regards of Reading and Comprehension skills.
- Weightings: 20%.
- Date: From November 28th to 30th, 2022.
Applicants must attend to an interview and disclose their motivations, self projections, and expectations. Logical-scientific reasoning will be measured based on the arguing of an English scientific paper.
- Weightings: 15%.
- Date: From December 5th to 7th, 2022.
- Date: 16th December 2022.
